What is autism? Autism is a disorder that involves retarded neurological development and occurs in children during infancy. Though, it can be detected by the time the child turns three years old. How should autistic children be taught? A very important feature of the disease is the retarded intellectual
ability of the child. The child finds it difficult to read, write and most importantly, understand things. They take a lot of time understanding simple things. This causes a lot of problem in the child studying in school. This calls for an immediate need for the parents and teachers to try and understand the psychology of the child and become adept at how to explain things to him in a manner that he understands. The apt teaching procedure for an autistic child involves therapies help him develop a better interaction ability, overcome mundane, repetitive routines and physical messiness. Although there is no one best treatment for all patients but the keyword is "patience" coupled with a lot of understanding of the child's state of mind. * The teaching procedure should involve a sequence of easy steps, active engagements of the child's interests by means of highly productive activities. The classroom should be such that it is comfortable and convenient for the child. * The teacher should try and avoid long verbal communications. It may be a difficulty for the patients trying to remember the sequence of instructions. If possible, the instructions can be written down. * Some autistic patients have the capability to sing better than they can speak. They may respond better if words and sentences are sung to them. Some patients with an abnormal sensitivity to sound can respond much better if the teacher talks to them softly. * Strong visual methods should be utilized in order to teach number concepts. It may consist of a combination of blocks which have different lengths and colors for the numbers from one to ten. * Many autistic children can be excellent at drawing, arts and computers. These talents should be brought out. * Some people with visual processing disorders may find it easier to read a black print printed on colored paper. The teacher should try and experiment with different colors to discover what color the student feels comfortable with.
